You may have seen photos online of people relaxing/sleeping in these crazy looking space boots in our office! So what are they all about?

These are Normatec Recovery Boots in Cape Town! Normatec are the leaders in rapid recovery systems. The normatec boots help you recover faster between workouts by reducing muscle soreness and improving circulation allowing you to push harder and go faster with each training session!

How does it work?

Normatec uses compressed air to massage your limbs, mobilize fluid, and speed recovery with their patented Normatec Pulse Massage Pattern.  You will first experience a pre-inflate cycle, during which the connected attachments are moulded to your exact body shape. The session will then begin by compressing each chamber as shown bellow.  Similar to the kneading and stroking done during a massage, each segment of the attachment will first compress in a pulsing manner and then release. This will repeat for each segment of the attachment as the compression pattern works its way up your limb.

My Ironman training programme involves about 15-18hrs of training per week. Of this, the weekend is the most strenuous, and also the most taxing on my legs. A typical weekend involves a long ride on the Saturday (often followed by a short run – short being up to 10km), and then a long run on the Sunday. It’s not uncommon to spend up to 10hrs training legs across the space of Saturday and Sunday. By Monday morning my legs are dead and extremely tired. The Normatec boots have an amazing recovery effect, especially when using it early in the week to recover from the weekend. It feels like a proper massage and it’s as if I can feel the lactic acid being drained from my muscles. The machine uses the chambers to work different parts of the limb, and the effect really feels like magic. It freshens up my legs immensely and I feel like I am able to get back into training immediately after. Those 45 minutes of the treatment also doubles up as a nice time-out to just chill and escape from the busy-ness of life. I usually plan to work on my laptop during the session, but most of the time I just end up taking the time-out and falling asleep because my body needs that more.
