Before last years Cape Town Cycle tour Shanaaz sent us all a link to Enter a contest to win a Saris H3 indoor trainer. It was one of those online contests you just had to put in your contact details and press submit.

Jump to a few weeks later I had totally forgotten about the contest and rushed from work to the expo to do some last minute shopping and race number collection.

I usually don’t answer my phone when I don’t recognise the number but because I was preparing for a shoot the next week I thought it could be someone from work looking for me. To my surprise it was a representative from Bicycle Power Trading calling me to say I won the competition! At first I had no idea what was going on and then I remembered the contest. I rushed over to their expo stand for some photos and to prove I was entered for the Cape Town Cycle Tour! That was the only condition to the competition.

I am not a stranger to indoor training I had used a basic indoor trainer and a Wahoo Kickr Snap wheel on trainer for just over a year. At the beginning of the South African Covid-19 Lockdown I did 4 consecutive 100km Zwift rides using the H3 while it was extremely tiring and long the H3 gave no problems for the over 3 hours of continuous use!

So what is the Saris H3 Direct Drive indoor trainer?

The H3 is a smart indoor trainer that transmits data on both ANT+ & Bluetooth Smart as well, allowing interactive resistance control across both ANT+ & Bluetooth Smart.  By applying resistance control, apps can simulate climbs as well as set specific wattage targets. This is great when you are stuck indoors but want that real riding experience on apps like Zwift or when you need to hit specific watts as prescribed in your training program.

This indoor trainer is one of the best on the market here are 4 things I love about the Saris H3

Easy Initial Setup

The H3 is super easy to setup, it comes with an easy to follow guide and there’s a ton of online videos and blog posts that can help you if you get stuck. There are not many parts and its really not a complicated process. I also love how easily the legs fold in allowing you to save some much needed space in your pain cave!

Connectivity

The H3 connects seamlessly across various devices. I have set it up with my MacBook Pro, iPhone and android devices. I have mainly used it to ride with Zwift but have had no issues when testing it out other training apps including Rouvy and RGT.

Quiet AF

This indoor trainer is seriously quiet! Most of the noise will come from your drive train and depending on your session the moans and groans you make as you hit those intervals at maximum effort! So if you won’t be waking up your family or the neighbours with early morning or late night training.

Stability and Build Quality

The build of the H3 is really solid and you know it won’t be going anywhere as you try to win a sprint segment on Zwift. I have moved my H3 around quite a bit and it is built quite solid! Its a bit heavy and bulky so it’s not the easiest to move around with but its definitely a trainer that is going to last a good few years.

The only downside to the H3 is that it doesn’t come with a cassette unless you buy one of the combo deals which does include one. So make sure you have a spare one that is compatible with your bike. Its not the end of the world but I had to wait a few days before I found one at a good price to use. If you’re not sure how to install a new cassette ask your local bike store. I just asked the guys at the shopI bought mine to install it and they were more than happy to.

Now that I have experienced the H3 and Direct Drive Indoor trainers I don’y think I can go back to any other kind of indoor cycling.

While a direct Drive IDT can be seen as really expensive compared to wheel on smart trainer or even basic indoor trainers. The science shows that if you are strapped for time and want to get the most out of your cycling a smart indoor trainer can make all the difference to your performance.

If you are in the market for a direct drive smart indoor trainer I would highly recommended the H3! It is well priced compared to other brands of direct drive indoor trainers and will provide you with endless hours of quiet, accurate power based indoor training!
